British Values

Promoting British Values at Goonhavern Primary School

At Goonhavern Primary School, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British values of:

  • Democracy

  • The Rule of Law

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual Respect

  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values are at the heart of what we do and are reflected in our school culture, curriculum, assemblies, and day-to-day interactions. We aim to help our children become thoughtful, respectful, and responsible citizens who understand their role in modern Britain.

Democracy

Pupils learn about democracy through class votes, pupil voice activities, and our school council. Children are encouraged to express their views and take part in decision-making processes.

The Rule of Law

We teach children the importance of laws and rules—why we have them, how they protect us, and the consequences when they are broken. Our school rules (“Be Ready, Be Safe, Be Respectful”) are consistently reinforced throughout the school day.

Individual Liberty

Within a safe and supportive environment, children are encouraged to make their own choices, develop their interests, and express themselves. We help pupils understand their rights and responsibilities and support them in making informed, safe decisions.

Mutual Respect

Respect is a core value at Goonhavern. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with courtesy and care.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Through our curriculum (especially RE and PSHE), assemblies, and wider school experiences, children explore different cultures, beliefs, and religions. We actively promote understanding and celebrate diversity, helping children develop open-mindedness and empathy.

By embedding these values into everything we do, we help our pupils grow into respectful, confident, and active members of society—ready to play a positive role in their communities and beyond.
