The story so far…
In 2013, we established a link with Nyakol Primary School in Uganda and set up a reciprocal visit with the view to learn from each other and teach pupils about life in a contrasting country.
After visiting Nyakol Primary School in Tororo, Uganda in 2014 we discovered that, during droughts, the children in the school go long periods of time without access to drinking water – often in extreme heat. Some of these children also walk long distances – again in the hot climate – to and from school, meaning that they are going the entire day without drinking.
After discussing this with the children in school, together we decided we wanted to help…
After three years of fundraising with huge efforts from pupils, staff, governors, parents and the local community we raised £5,000. Pupils from the school showed their entrepreneurial skills setting up their own businesses from scratch. They applied for a loan, set up their businesses and marketed their goods and services. The successful businesses generously donated their profits towards the bore hole.
Meanwhile, a team of staff, governors and parents completed the Perranporth Extreme Surf Triathlon raising further funds through sponsorship. The triathlon is recognised as being one of the toughest in the country with an unpredictable surf swim, a challenging hilly bike route and an unforgiving run up and down the sand dunes on Perranporth beach. This as well as a couple of non-school uniform days and a charity auction saw us reach a total of £5,000.
However, due to fluctuating exchange rates and inflation, we were £500 short of our total! St. Agnes & St. Piran Rotary Club generously donated the remaining money needed for the project to begin.
On the 22nd December 2018, the hard work paid off and the bore hole was complete. Over 1000 children in the school and local community now have access to clean drinking water all year round. Photos of the construction and the finished bore hole can be seen below.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the project – I am extremely proud of this accomplishment.

Currently (June 2020), we are looking for ways to reestablish our link with Nyakol School.
